EmoLogic and the Future of Search Engines

By: Dr. Tom Macon, Ph. D.

Allow me to boldly outline my vision of the evolution and progression of technology over the next 5 years related to the evolving emotional intelligence and the future of search engines.

I have coined a term for my concept, and lovingly refer to it as emologic responsive search indexing.

In brief, I believe you can reasonably expect search engines, such as Google, Bing, Yahoo and about 1200 of their affiliated partners, will evolve into a hybrid emotional intelligence based algorithms. I believe that emologic is emerging at a breakneck pace, and that developments such as Emotiv Brain Wave computer interface will someday soon change our computer search engines forever.

Based on the latest developments in neuro-technology, Emotiv has developed a revolutionary new personal interface for human computer interaction. Emotiv is a neuroengineering company that has brought to market a breakthrough interface technology for digital media taking inputs directly from the brain. This technology utterly transforms the way we interact with computers.  Emotiv's vision is to revolutionize human-computer input in the same way the graphic user interface did 20 years ago.

Applications for the Emotiv technology and interface span an amazing variety of potential industries, everything from gaming to interactive television, everyday computer interactions, hands-free control systems, smart adaptive environments, art, accessibility design, market research, psychology, medicine, robotics, automotive, transport safety, defense and security. According to a spokesperson from Emotive, the company plans to introduce Emotiv into these and other broad realms through established developers and researchers in over 70 countries; which are already working with the technology. For more details, please see: http://www.emotiv.com/corporate/.

Because the Emotiv EPOC is a high resolution, neuro-signal acquisition and processing wireless neuroheadset, which uses a set of sensors to tune into electric signals produced by the brain to detect user thoughts, feelings and expressions and connects wirelessly to most PCs; I believe my future view to be reasonable.  I postulate that this type of technology platform will create an emergence of an emotional indexed response to everything we encounter on the net. What a consumer thinks or feels about a product or service, will be indexed in real-time.

Imagine the accuracy that may be possible in consumer satisfaction feedback about everything. Not only would it be likely to be reliable, it will also be real time. This will change sales and marketing as we know it. The Emotiv EPOC system allows you to control your computer with brain waves. In video games, this allows the game program to read your emotional response and provide experiences that are more pleasing to you. Online gaming is big. So is the desire to think-type, etc. These two areas alone would yield a tremendous user base.

How might “emologic” change social media in general? Will we think and tweet? How will we parse our politeness in conversation? Will we have to buy a modified software package to allow us to be disingenuous?

Will dating sites become a quick battery of emotional neural imprints that are indexed in a nano second against the true nano print of another subscriber’s profile? Maybe online dating, which now accounts for about 1/7th of all permanent relationships, will yield a permanent mate on your first visit. Maybe you won’t have to worry about scrolling through endless profiles and cyber courting. Instead, you will be neuro-paired and ready for marriage by the end of your brief logon session. What a relief. I’m sure the system will be advanced enough to notify all of your family and friends of your certified cyber match, and perhaps even send out wedding invitations.

I remember watching a documentary on a mind reading seed in ancient Egypt. The flax-like seed was said to impart telepathic powers upon simple ingestion. It is said that the Pharaoh finally ordered the crop to be burned because of all of the social problems that resulted from everyone being able to read each other’s minds. The ancient government started having trouble managing its citizens, as they could instantly determine falsehoods perpetrated by their leaders. Perhaps we should test out these devices on our politicians first. If that goes well, then we can distribute them to the masses.

Social media is already affecting how retailers and manufacturers market their products. Can anyone truly respond to consumer demand at the speed of thought? Perhaps not, but one thing is sure; the future is going to be exciting. And the major search engines and social media platforms that we love and depend on will be forever changing to meet consumer demand and expectations.

I’m interested in your thoughts on this subject, and how you see emologic affecting search engines and social media.

  1. well is fascinating what you wrote on here because you are focusing on the enterprise use of emotive on massive proportions to make a new kind of marketing reading, but that create new debates about privacy, but what i really thing that we have here with emotive, is the ultimate control of all our technologies and with really good software, the fastest way to comunicated and do things.

  2. I'm actually more interested in how it might help people with handicaps that otherwise prevent them from normal forms of communication...

Autistic, Deaf, Mute, otherwise restricted people...

Also Children who haven't started to talk yet have already been shown to excel in the use of tech like the iPad and iPhone, add this in to the mix and them what?!

The way people act and think is already under a major revision based on social media, and I don't think it's going to plateau for some time, until the tech itself comes to a common ground

  3. Not sure how I feel about indexing our emotions to a point of finding a perfect mate instantaneously. This concept reminds me a bit of the movie TiMER, which can be found here - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1179794/

I feel as though doing such a thing takes out the bonding process, and may actually make some people feel trapped.

  4. I'm not sure how I feel about indexing human love and emotions, that is the part that scares me. It starts to go towards less love and more science, and that's something I feel should be left untouched.

  5. Well, if it would make it easy for me to finally find someone, I'd say that that's the technology we should be investing our time in! :)

  6. I see the interest in using technology to make buying and marketing easier, but the fact of the matter is that I don't see this being employed for a long, long time. Anyone else feel this way?

  7. well the idea of informative technology which your blog generate is interesting.
Search engine and the way people use it is very helpful. Combined with informative technology, I think is a welcome idea.

  8. most at times, I tend to believe that search engines and the way they are being used today, is going to be sufficient for future reference. Science on the other side, can compliment in making it more fun.

  9. informative technology anyway you see it is welcome idea. Love your blog and the idea it brings. Search rooms and science combined open up room a more better option.

  10. Your blog is interesting and educative, and I share in your ideas. In the future science will always create a better option combined with what ever the search rooms can offer.

  11. Wow that sounds fascinating! It would be great for those with disabilities to use this.

  12. What's the radiation like on this thing?

I'm with Harte. Technology is good but how about our rapidly decreasing privacy?

I don't believe there is anything such as privacy on the internet anyway.. so unless you are truly a luddite then your privacy is being evaded every day.

  15. Emotiv will certainly benefit us in some ways but it will also take away a lot from us because the only thing that separates us from robots is that we are emotional and they are not. If we begin to provide real time information about emotions it will ruin the fun that we enjoy now.

  16. I am really amazed at the kind of technology that will come in the future. I mean it is really a good thing that we will be able to read thoughts and opinions and even enjoy social interaction only through our minds. Amazing man.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I am not sure if this will help in personal life, but yes certainly beneficial for corporates who can know more about their customers and make better products that make sense.

  18. i like these type of technology(emologic) which will come in future,Social media marketing refers to the process of gaining traffic and this is interesting that the role of social media in search results is influencing how health organizations attract and treat patients.

  19. It is indeed a proof of technology advancement. It is a common error for reporters and other writers to say that transhumanists “claim to be transhuman” or “call themselves transhuman”

  20. New kinds of cognitive tools will be built that combine artificial intelligence with interface technology. Molecular nanotechnology has the potential to manufacture abundant resources for everybody and to give us control over the biochemical processes in our bodies, enabling us to eliminate disease and unwanted aging.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Those cognitive tools will help a lot. The enhancement options being discussed include radical extension of human health-span, eradication of disease, elimination of unnecessary suffering, and augmentation of human intellectual, physical, and emotional capacities.

  22. And also i read that Technology has brought many great positives to the business world. Today digital copiers allow for a wide range of operations far beyond a black and white copy.

    ReplyDelete
  23. This tool is indeed a fascinating one. But I also go with the other posts. Can an individual still have his privacy with this kind of device? This could be very helpful, but this could also do damages. Well, it's up to the user.

  25. If this tool can detect or read the mind of a human, I believe that this should be tested first by the politicians and other leaders. This also can be useful to the justice system.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yeah...The use of EmoLogic is really important.
but i'm totally agree that the future of the world is getting exciting!

if the technology in the future can detect anything in human mind, everything will become disaster.

if you're a police, you can immediately know what a suspect is thinking.

Hmm... all things that humans think aren't always a good thing. In our day to day lives we may think something but then after a while we realise that what we think is a bit over the top so we scale it down or don't do it at all. Like how many times could someone think, "Oh, I wish I could punch him for that" but then not really mean it. Imagine if this machine made you punch the person - you'd definitely regret it!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree with you redrenegade. Yeah, sometimes, out of a sudden emotion, we think negative or simply bad things. But as our emotions calm down, we may sometimes forget that we have thought of that negative thing.

Uhm, not knowing the thoughts of the people around us gives life a thrill! :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. I wonder how this EmoLogic can exactly help the future search engines. What is the percentage of the accuracy of this tool? Many will expect that this can give reliable findings.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Even if things around us become more complicated, we can still live simply and happily.

    ReplyDelete
  31. EmoLogic could be very helpful to those people who could not talk, or who cannot move their hands to use the keyboard and mouse. They will just simply use their mind and think, that way, they can have the power to control the computer.

    ReplyDelete
  32. There's a movie entitled "The Bone Collector". A policeman who got paralyzed because of an accident. He can only move some of his fingers. But in that movie, I remember, he could access the computer by just looking at the monitor and blinking, that serves as a click when using a mouse.

    ReplyDelete
  33. If this tool can read minds, then maybe people will not dare to think of anything against someone else nor plan of making lies.

  34. Riley Emmett21:14

    @ marzee26

I agree with you. I think these people need to chill a bit with all this technology hitting the market

    ReplyDelete
  35. Carla Bressler22:09

    Riley,

There was an ancient flax-like seed in ancient Egypt, that when ingested, allowed the consumer to read minds clearly for about 45 minutes. It caused so much grief for the Pharaoh that he ordered all of the fields burned. On jar of perfect seeds was buried with him. This was rediscovered in the 20th century and the US Government has possession of the seeds. Imagine the seeds used in conjunction with this type of device. Perhaps one could amplify their X-waves to a super-human state. I guess we could all be X-Men for real! Who wants to be Magneto?
